Compliance teams have always had to choose between depth and coverage. A thorough review of one advice file takes hours, so most firms check a sample and accept that the rest of the back book goes unread. AI compliance file checking promises to change that balance, and several UK vendors now offer it. They take noticeably different approaches.
This article sets out what the main tools say they do, using the vendors' own pages seen in October 2026, explains how our own app, Scrutineer, approaches the job, and gives a short test plan you can apply to any of them. We make one of these products, so every competitor claim below is attributed and linked.
What AI compliance file checking needs to do
Before comparing products, it helps to be clear about the job. A sound file check asks whether the file shows suitable advice, properly disclosed and properly recorded. In practice that means reading the fact find, suitability report and supporting documents against rules such as COBS 9.4.7R, which requires the report to "explain why the firm has concluded that the recommended transaction is suitable" and "explain any possible disadvantages of the transaction for the client", and checking charging and ongoing service disclosures under COBS 6.1A.
A useful tool should help with three things:
- Coverage: making it practical to check more files, ideally all of them.
- Evidence: showing which rule each finding engages and what in the file supports it.
- Consistency: applying the same standard every time, and the firm's own standard where it has one.
There is also a Consumer Duty angle. Under PRIN 2A.9.8R, firms must "regularly monitor the outcomes retail customers receive", including from "the communications the firm has with retail customers". File checking evidence often feeds that monitoring.
The main UK options
Aveni Detect
Aveni says Aveni Detect "Automates file checking and triages high-risk cases for compliance teams", and that it supports Consumer Duty management, reporting and outcome documentation. Aveni says it expands quality assurance coverage from 1% to 100%. An Aveni case study reports QA assessment time cut from 90 minutes to 15 minutes. Triage of high-risk cases is a genuinely useful feature for networks and larger firms with many files to prioritise.
AdvisoryAI Colin
Colin is AdvisoryAI's compliance assistant. According to AdvisoryAI's website, seen 7 October 2026, it checks against "FCA Consumer Duty, COBS, and FCA Handbook standards", with "Pass, partial pass, or fail grading, with gaps and fixes". Its pricing page lists Colin at £89 per user per month ex VAT. At launch, IFA Magazine reported AdvisoryAI's claim that Colin does in five minutes what would take two hours or more by hand. It offers a 14-day free trial, no lock-in and a 30-day money-back guarantee, and published pricing makes it easy to budget for.
Saturn Guardian Compliance Suite
Saturn says its Guardian Compliance Suite lets firms "Automate file checks & meeting observations". For firms that also want meeting observations from the same supplier, that combination may appeal.
Model Office
Model Office launched client file review dashboards in May 2026, as reported by IFA Magazine on 18 May 2026. The report describes automated audits that benchmark documents against FCA rules, individual file scoring, digital audit trails and integration with CRM systems.
How Scrutineer approaches file checking
Scrutineer is a desktop app for Mac and Windows that runs on the firm's own computers, with the AI work done through the firm's own Claude or ChatGPT account. The approach is to read the whole client folder the way a reviewer would:
- it reads every document in every subfolder, including scans, using on-device text recognition, and transcribes meeting recordings found in the file on the machine, with nothing uploaded for that step;
- it gives two scores, one for FCA compliance and one for the firm's own file-quality standard, with an overall verdict of Suitable, Unclear or Unsuitable and a separate disclosure assessment;
- every finding is tied to a named FCA rule, such as COBS 6.1A or PRIN 2A.4, with the supporting passage quoted from the file;
- it flags any review that could only read part of a folder, so a score is never quietly based on half the evidence;
- it learns from the firm's own benchmark scores, keeps separate rule packs for new client and annual review files, and compares review periods;
- it produces outstanding file actions and a missing-document checklist for each client, and lets you ask the FCA Handbook a question directly.
By our estimate, a file review drops from about half a day to minutes, saving about 3.5 hours a file. We describe the thinking behind full coverage in why most firms only check a sample.
Scrutineer does not triage a whole book from a central dashboard in the way a network platform might, and it does not integrate with a CRM. It works one client folder at a time, with a dashboard of every check run.
The tools side by side

| Aveni Detect | Automated file checking, high-risk triage, Consumer Duty support | Vendor-hosted ("Aveni runs on AWS", per Aveni) | Not published on the pages we reviewed |
| AdvisoryAI Colin | Consumer Duty, COBS and FCA Handbook standards; pass, partial pass or fail | Online service with a web login | £89 + VAT per user per month |
| Saturn Guardian | File checks and meeting observations | Vendor-hosted (per Saturn's security page) | Not published on the pages we reviewed |
| Model Office | Client file review dashboards with file scoring and audits against FCA rules (as reported, May 2026) | Not confirmed in our research | Not stated in the report we reviewed |
| IFA Tools Scrutineer | FCA compliance and firm file-quality scores, rule-linked findings, missing-document checklist | Desktop app, firm's own AI account | £99 + VAT per adviser per month, plus the firm's own AI account |
Prices may change. IFA Tools users also pay separately for their own Claude or ChatGPT account; on claude.com/pricing, seen 7 October 2026, Claude Pro was $20 monthly. Time savings in this article are each vendor's own claim or, for Scrutineer, our estimate. They were not measured on the same files and should not be compared directly.
How to test any file checking tool
The best way to choose is to run the same files through each shortlisted tool. A simple plan:
- Pick five files you already know well, including at least one you rated poor and one with scanned paperwork.
- Compare findings with your own. Did the tool catch what your reviewer caught? Did it raise anything new, and was it right?
- Check the evidence. For each finding, can you see the rule and the passage it relied on?
- Look for silent gaps. Does the tool tell you when it could not read a document?
- Test your own standard. Can it reflect how your firm scores files, not only a generic one?
- Map the data. Where do the files go, under whose contract, and are they used for training? Our checklist in questions to ask an AI vendor helps here.
Whatever tool you choose, the conclusions remain the firm's. A tool can read, score and point to evidence; a competent reviewer still decides, agrees remediation and signs off. No tool makes a firm compliant.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI check every compliance file instead of a sample?
Several vendors say so: Aveni says Detect expands quality assurance coverage from 1% to 100%, and Scrutineer is built to make checking every file practical. Whether it works for you depends on how much reviewer time remains for the findings.
Do AI file checks replace a compliance reviewer?
No. They do the reading and assembling, which is most of the time. The judgement, challenge and sign-off stay with a competent person.
How should I compare vendor time savings?
Carefully. Each figure is the vendor's own claim or estimate on its own examples. Run your own files through each tool and time it.
